"I can't afford it..." and other untruths we sell ourselves

Updated: May 16, 2020

Recently I've been noticing a theme. In casual conversations with women, I'm hearing this lie - "I can't afford to.. insert whatever here". There is a lot of talk about "mind set" right now and this is yet another example of a mind set block that stops us from achieving our goals.

Do you REALLY want better health? Do you want to stop feeling like crap? Do you REALLY want to feel happier? Because... if you really do... then don't lie to yourself. You CAN afford to prioritize your health. And you have to, because no one else will. You CAN afford to prioritize YOU! Once you recognize that you are worth the time and money, there is a way to afford your goals.

I polled some of my girlfriends who are committed to certain health goals for themselves and their families. They each have their own critical wellness products that they spend their money on, monthly and one of them is essential oils. Why essential oils? Because essential oils can help us achieve our goals faster, and while we are waiting to get there, they help us to feel better and decrease symptoms without giving us nasty side effects like pharmaceuticals can. It's a win win. Yes, essential oils are trendy right now and Yes, you have to pick the right company. But bottom line, people in the wellness space know that essential oils are a part of the wellness picture. Now, some may say that essential oils are expensive - certainly, the therapeutic grade, pure, high quality oils are not what I would call cheap - but you do get what you pay for, and there are ways to save money so you can afford these needle movers. And seriously, a $10 lemon essential oil is affordable for anyone. Come on! That's the price of 2 Starbucks coffees or the price of a paperback book. And it has 250 drops in it - did you know that it takes about 50 lemons to fill a 15 ML bottle with 250 drops? That's about $50 worth of lemons in one bottle of lemon essential oil that costs $10. And.. you only need 1 drop of that $10 bottle of lemon for your glass of water for powerful cleansing, or 10 drops to make a soft scrub cleaner at home. Talk about POWER and value!

Here are the Top Tips from my girls who are well on their way to achieving a variety of wellness goals: digestive health, energy, better sleep, hormone balance, and gorgeous skin.

Tip # 1 Save on Food Grocery bill. Focus on whole foods and decrease purchase on boxed and bagged foods. Look for CSAs or other local companies with organic produce that offer discounts WAY better than what any grocer store could offer you. Most of my girls use Misfit Markets, and so do I. I get 2 deliveries per month for under $70.00. Organic, delicious produce and I don't have to run around the grocery store to get it. Butcher Box is what I use to get my meat and fish. around $200 a month for a large, mixed box with several added products that I vary according to the season. Beyond this, I use the grocery store for grains (few), bread, milk, eggs. I don't buy a lot of snacks because I don't eat them and I'm not in the grocery store aisles being tempted! I usually go to the store about 2 X per month to get odds and ends, that's it. All told, I am spending 50% less on my grocery bill than I used to with these simple strategies.

Tip # 2 Save by cutting back on eating out and entertainment. We eat out no more than 1 X per month because I have really good food at home that I can use to whip up quick/easy skillet meals on nights when I'm tired and don't feel like "really" cooking. I also prefer the taste of my food so there is no con for me. For entertainment, we've cut out the movies as well, preferring to watch documentaries, T.V. or amazon prime Netflix. We don't have to drive and we get to make our own popcorn. When I get together with my friends, we often entertain in each other's homes, or we meet for a walk or hike instead of eating out.

Tip # 3 Use Rewards Programs. I love essential oils so I use Doterra's Loyalty Rewards Program. I get 30% back in rewards points for everything I buy at wholesale price. So the winning strategy is... buy everything you possibly can using rewards programs. I buy shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, all my supplements, cleaning products (oils primarily because I make all my own cleaning products now), and all my pharmaceutical products (cough drops, vapor rubs, pain remedies, skin and rash remedies) through my monthly LRP. I just earned about $80 in points in less than 2 months and I use those points to buy the "expensive" oil blends. So guess which oil I'm aiming for this month? you got it! The King of all oils, Frankincense. I also spend at least $125 per month easily so I always get a free oil (usually valued at $15-$20)

Tip # 4 Make your own cleaning products and skin care products. My laundry detergent (washing soda, borax, castile soap and wild orange E.O.) costs me about $3.50 as compared to Tide at $10.00 for the same amount of loads. My multi-purpose cleaner costs me less than $1 as compared to the 409 I used to use at $5.48. A bottle of frankincense and fractionated coconut oil as my wrinkle cream costs the same as a good wrinkle cream but lasts me months and months longer.

Tip # 5 Spend your money only on products that align with your values and health goals. How you do this will vary according to what's important to you, but believe me, you are currently spending on things you don't care that much about. And you don't have to or need to. For me, I choose to not buy special coffees or smoothies when out and about (I bring my water with me), don't do my nails, don't color my hair, limited hair cuts and I buy clothes at discounted prices (Ebay purchase of a new Draper James dress cost me $68.99).

Bonus Tip # 6. Buy kits of essential oils - like I said before, oils are cheaper than the cleaning products, skin care creams that you have been buying. So stock up on the best oils using a kit. This is THE very best way to get more oils for less money. For example, Doterra offers a Family Essentials Kit (the one I started with) for about $125.00 with the top 10 essential oils. A friend of mine bought this kit, used the oils every day (multiple) and only after 4 months is she running out.
